This is useful for spelling words and names over the phone and radios. It will limit confusion with different languages and accents – for example: The letter W (Whiskey) in Afrikaans could be mistaken for the letter V (Victor) in English.

Reading the registration number CF 12345 will then be: Charlie Foxtrot 12345

The Call Sign for PHSNHW on the NHW Radios is: Sierra Our Patrollers are numbered – For example mine is: Sierra 3

Papa is use as an affirmative reply to a question (in Afrikaans it would be Positief, which is why they use Papa).

Delta is use to thank someone (in Afrikaans it would be Dankie, which is why they use Papa).

Zero is use for calling out a 0 (nil).
